An Awesome Day
Yes, we are still alive! It is way harder than I thought to try to post every day. I will try to catch up tonight, so stay tuned!
June 28
Every morning we wake up to a wonderful breakfast on the terrace. This morning Jeff asked,”Do we get the same breakfast again?” because he has discovered that he Loves greek yogurt and honey. The yogurt here is very thick (as a matter of fact, Jim spread it on his bread the first day before I told him what it was!)

Since we already had the car and they said we could use it to drive down to the port when we took the ferry, we decided to keep it for the next 2 days. They did exchange it for a smaller car though, which turned out to be a good thing. The boys wanted to check out another beach, so we headed to Kamari. It was another black beach, but this time it was more like very small pebbles than sand. Very hard on the feet (and bad for pedicures!) The town was lovely though, and had some of the best prices we saw on the island. The boys have learned how to order gyros in greek. I keep making the ‘g’ sound at the beginning of the word and Stephen keeps correcting me. The local beer ‘Mythos” is very good (one shop owner told us that the germans drink it, so he knows it’s good!) Nothing better than gyros and beer on the beach!

While we were sitting under our palapas, I noticed that there were cars driving up and down a road on the mountain behind us. The road had a lot of switchbacks, and the cars looked like they were going quite slowly (which really should have been a tip off to me - this is greece after all!). It looked very interesting and I told Jim and the boys that we should go up it.

It wasn’t bad at first, but then the road turned to cobblestone, and got narrower and narrower, until it was just about one lane wide in north american standards. The worst part was that there were no shoulders and the road just dropped off in several places. We were about a third of the way up and we decided to turn around. (Can you believe that? Jim Never turns around!) Well, easier said than done on those tight corners. We decided to soldier on, and Marian was quite calm most of the way...

You can’t blame her, look at the road! We called it the Treacherous Trail of Terror!

It was SO worth it though, look at the view! (Do you see those tiny palapas down there???)

By the way, if you click on the picture, it will open up larger. (Don't click on that picture of me! The boys made me make that face)
Coming down was better than going up and by the time we got to the bottom we knew we could handle any road anywhere!

It has been a glorious day here ~ as it should be since it is July 1!!! The gods have been shining on us. No rain, and lots of sunshine. The ceremonies from Parliament Hill left a little to be desired ~ tattoos and piercings on some of the performers ~ but then maybe it is my age! I wish we were there to see the fireworks tonight. It is an awesome sight. It is something every Canadian should see.
Keep those photos and stories coming. I am enjoying it.

PS What about the luggage? I didn't read if you got it alright and how long you were without it.
